2023 KIA NiroFrom a design standpoint, the second-generation Kia Niro differs significantly from its predecessor, with designers taking a bolder style inspired by the 2019 HabaNiro concept. There are also indications in the current Sportage, particularly on sturdy shoulders, upright windows, and interiors. The pillar C, which is painted a different color than the rest of the car, isn’t just for show; Kia claims it improves airflow and thus aerodynamics.

The rear of Niro’s new design is what makes it stand out. If you’re like me, the contrast strip between the taillights and the C-pillars is the first thing that comes to mind. Kia claims that its design combines simple surface treatments with dynamic sections to emphasize modernity and appeal to a wider audience. The HabaNiro concept inspired the C pillar strip. Thankfully, it softened from the start of the concept. The rear is very plain, save from the little rear lights that blend in with the back and the bottom bumper that seems like it was ripped from another car and set upside down.

The interior has also been entirely overhauled and now has a dashboard layout that is identical to that of the new Sportage.Kia’s side-by-side screens, infotainment with separate buttons for climate settings and other functions, are already familiar to us.We prefer this arrangement since it allows us to quickly access certain amenities without having to explore the menu. The Niro’s clumsy gear levers were earlier replaced with sleeker rotary knobs that freed up more room at the center console’s bottom.Physical buttons for heated and ventilated seats, heated steering wheels, auto-hold functions, and parking assistance systems flank the redesigned shifter.

New recycled materials are used throughout the cabin, including recycled wallpaper for the headliners, Bio PU with Tencel from eucalyptus leaves for the upholstery, and BTX-free paint (benzene, toluene, and xylene) on the door panels. They also have a high-tech lightweight chair mechanism that enhances the space, comfort, and elegance of the seats. The back cover of the front headrest contains a coat rack and has small dimensions. The headliner is composed of recycled wallpaper, while the seats are constructed of Bio PU with Tencel from eucalyptus leaves, according to Kia.The door panels are painted with BTX, a water-based paint that is free of benzene, toluene, and xylene isomers, and is made with sustainability in mind.

The new vehicle will be available in hybrid (Niro HEV), plug-in hybrid (Niro PHEV), and battery-electric (Niro EV) configurations. The new Niro EV’s powertrain details have yet to be revealed, but expect it to outperform the previous 201 horsepower and 239-mile range variants. The vehicle, like the 2022 EV6, could include an 800-volt electrical system and two-way charging. The Niro PHEV has a technology that, depending on the car’s location, automatically changes it to electric mode. When approaching a city or residential area, or near schools and hospitals, the feature will use navigation data or driving history to choose an electric mode. It also recognizes commonly visited regions as power zones, such as your home or business.Despite the introduction of more specialist EVs like the EV6 (the EV9 is also on the way), Kia will continue to release electric versions of vehicles with internal combustion engines, such as the new Niro EV.Kia wants to have 11 electric vehicles in its inventory by the end of 2026, with just seven of them dedicated to electric vehicles.
